Palu-Palu and Jade

Palu-Palu and Jade reached IPPL in March 1996 with their son Maui (now paired with Speedy). They came from Maui Zoo. Maui, an island in the Hawaii group, has many rich residents, but the zoo received little public or private support and closed its doors in 1996 after a public outcry against the filthy conditions in which many of the animals were housed. The "Three" consisted of "Boy," his mate Jade, and their young son Maui. When they arrived, we decided to rename "Boy." A Hawaiian member selected the name "Palu-Palu" which means "Soft-Softly." "Boy" had been a pet of a retired Pan Am pilot, Sam Pryor. When Pryor died, "Boy" had ended up at Maui Zoo.

The three gibbons traveled to the United States with a human friend and several boxes of pineapples! They have settled in well. Maui grew up and we tried him out with the tempestuous Michelle. After his relationship with Michelle didn't work out, Maui now lives with Speedy, a gibbon born to Arun Rangsi and Shanti.

Palu-Palu and Jade have a runway that runs alongside the windows looking over IPPL's office. Palu-Palu especially enjoys sitting in his runway "supervising" the office staff. He also likes stretching out a long arm and holding your hand if he's in a sweet mood, or pulling your hair if he's in a mischievous mood.
