Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection saving orphaned chimps

In the IPPL March Newsletter, there is a story about an organization doing remarkable work in West Africa caring for and saving orphaned chimps. Jim and Jenny Desmond, the founders of Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue Protection (LCRP), were hired to care for 66 chimpanzees in Libera. The chimpanzees left on an island off the coast to die by the New York Blood Center (NYBC). Jim and Jenny arrived in Liberia and went to work. It didn’t take long for them to realized that not only did they need to save these chimps, but there was a much larger crisis. Illegal bushmeat and pet trades were destroying the chimpanzee populations and leaving many orphaned chimpanzees.

Learning about the crisis

Jim and Jenny created the LCRP in 2016. Currently they care for forty seven orphans under the age of 7. These orphaned chimpanzees come to the sanctuary very traumatized. You will also meet Max and Gloria, two adorable residents who are safe because of the LCRP.

Saving Western Chimps

LCRP was recently featured on CNN’s Inside Africa. It’s heartbreaking to see the infant chimpanzees, knowing that they most likely witnessed the murder of their mothers.

A chance at a future

Your support gave us the means to help the LCRP with funding to care for the influx of orphaned chimpanzees and fight to stop poachers. Thanks to Jenny and Jim these infant chimps get a second chance at life. They will also get the chance to start a family and raise their children in the wild.
