Every day we feed our gibbons a variety of mixed veggies for breakfast. Lately, the menu has included peppers, beets, cauliflower, carrots, beans, cucumbers, romaine lettuce, and herbs like cilantro. Lunch is a changing assortment of fresh fruit, which for the past week has included apples, oranges, kiwi, papaya, cantaloupe, pineapple, and a few mangoes. As an evening snack—and added incentive to come indoors promptly for the night—they always get a banana.

Yesterday afternoon our newest animal caregiver Rachel and I were admiring the gusto with which Gus seemed to be enjoying his lunch. Most of our gibbons will just suck the juice out of their daily helping of citrus, but not Gus: he eats the whole thing. If you crank up the volume, you can hear him chomping away happily on his slice of orange.
