Every year our town paper, the Summerville Journal Scene, carries a special section on local “Women to Watch.” Ten women representing a wide variety of occupations are chosen for this honor. This year, the recipients included, a single mom who battled poverty to start her own law firm, the director of an award-winning bed and breakfast, a woman who turned the death of her daughter into a nationwide crusade to promote child safety, a pediatric nurse, and a woman who advocates for children involved in abuse cases.

After the ceremony, I stood with some of the IPPL staff members who come to the reception: left to right, Tina McCoy, me, Barbara Allison, and Megan McCue-Jones.

This year I was delighted to be one of the women selected for this tribute.

Last night an awards ceremony and reception was held in downtown Summerville. I received an attractive plaque from Ellen Priest, the publisher of the Journal Scene, and Judy Watts, the retiring editor. Thank you for this honor and for supporting the work of so many wonderful local women!

Shirley McGreal is more than deserving of this recognition. She’s the reason I’ve been a paying member of IPPL for 20 years. Great job, Shirley!
