Born: September 5, 1985
Favorite food: She’s a good eater when she gets something she likes and appreciates being given whole bananas and entire (small) bunches of grapes
Favorite activity: Disrupting things when Scrappy is getting extra attention from female caregivers
Uma came with her mate Scrappy to IPPL in March 2007 from another sanctuary in Texas. They had been sent to Texas in 1993 from what was then known as the Glen Oak Zoo in Peoria, Illinois, after being confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We are continuously happy that this pair was kept together through all these transfers since it is not uncommon for primates to be split up and sent to different locations when their homes are forced to move them.
Uma is a beautiful gibbon with a terrific mane framing her face. She is one of the shyer gibbons, but she will accept her favorite treats like grapes or dates from certain members of the staff. If one offers her something she’s not interested in, such as raisins, she’ll just look at you disdainfully as though to insinuate that you’re wasting her time! Uma often performs territorial displays for nearby females to show them who is in charge. She will stomp her feet and show her teeth to the other female gibbons. It is all very ferocious looking, but ceases rather quickly, and Uma’s inherent cuteness and otherwise reserved personality charms the staff after every outburst.
