This is IPPL's small grant season. Among this year's recipients is C.A.R.E, the baboon sanctuary in South Africa founded by the late Rita Miljo. We have been helping them for years. It's great to know our supporters' help is appreciated.We are absolutely thrilled to share with you news that our funding proposal for GPS collars has been successful meaning in the new year we have the plans for some wild-born, orphaned male baboons to be released onto protected reserves to join existing baboon troops as per their natural dispersal patterns. Thanks to Shirley McGreal and her incredible team at International Primate Protection League we have males earmarked for release in 2019... their freedom is just around the corner. The wild-born orphaned males we have in mind have grown up within our normal rehabilitation troop structure, are afraid of humans and at the natural age of dispersal. This release style is different from our usual style of releasing a whole troop and is only suited to selected males which fit within a certain criteria. The collars allow us to allot "Geo-Fences" which means if the animal moves outside of the protected area we can react. The collars allow a level of control over without the need of humans observers on the ground which for this release style could impede on the baboons chances of integration. We have vast experiences of releasing whole troops of baboons to know that this can work and it is so very necessary since it is the goal for all the baboons which come to the centre, and housing males in particular has a lot of challenges. Without the collars this release style wouldn't be as desirable since we wouldn't be able to document the outcome or have any follow-up data. Many reserve managers are reluctant to allow for releases of whole troops since the process is lengthily and in the few areas where baboons are safe troops usually already exist. Reserve managers are more open to the addition of one or two males to join existing troops especially with the collars to ensure a level of control and allow us to collect data. Collars will help us easily share with you all the progress of the releases and also allow for us to capture the data easily to enable us to write-up and publish the results. Releasing or relocation of wild animals has the potential to be a useful conservation tool, especially for endangered animals. It has been suggested that data on a non-endangered species will greatly aid when planning reintroduction projects of endangered species. The information collected can be hugely valuable to conservation science AND helps us achieve our goals of FREEDOM for the orphans which had their freedom stolen from them as infants. I can't wait to get started. Freedom is just around the corner and I know a lot of males which will grab this opportunity as they run into the mountains and re-gain their place in nature. The collars are reusable and so can be reconditioned to be reused - and as you know we have a lot of baboons ready and waiting for their chance to be free, so they will get used over and over again. We did a lot of home-work on the collars, consulted with many scientists and will continue to consult and collaborate as the project unfolds. This Grant will make a HUGE difference to CARE, the baboons being released and the ones still waiting at the centre as releasing baboons (males in particular) free's up space and keeps stress and competition within the enclosures to a minimum. Wahoo! We can't wait to start! Photo from 2015 successful release of New Troops onto a protected mountainous Nature Reserve, Limpopo - you will see we tagged these baboons for easy identification. Most of the tags were pulled out or fell out over the course of a few months, which was desirable anyway since they could be a disadvantage to the baboons in the long run (making them more visible to predators and poachers). Poachers became an issue on the reserve after a successful land-claim during the release process despite the employment of rangers. This resulted in 5 baboons from a previous release (KC troop) being shot by poachers which devastated us and crushed our spirits since the reserve, particularly the area where we released was such an ideal location. Anti-poaching efforts on the reserve will continue and we are planning an updated census. Poaching has decreased on the reserve after the spike when the community won the land-claim and didn't really know what it meant; the reserve is a protected area and lots of negotiations/meetings and workshops have been a result. Poaching is a huge issue in South Africa and is decimating wildlife populations. With poaching and increases in conflicting land-use, finding safe and suitable release sites has become increasingly challenging. The war on poachers continues. ... See MoreSee Less
